Red all about it and balayage

Red is the current IT girl micro  colour trend or so it seems, we can’t open a magazine without reading about it and even the Daily Mail did an article on it earlier in the year  (more about that later).
My lovely client  Clara Paget has gone back red, who is filming the hit USA show Black Sails which you can now see on Amazon here in the UK.  Ronze  ‘a red bronze’ is trending in the USA a getting a slight look in here in the UK

.Did you know that three out of four people who colour their hair red do so in a salon? That’s massive business and certainly a market that is growing . When you think about it in real terms consumers can get confused with red or copper and usually say red, so that’s really anyone from a base level three to a level nine, again a massive area and so it doesn’t have to be super bright, it could even be just a hint or a deep rich red.

The potential to upsell is enormous as bright reds tend to fade fast, so using the right shampoos and conditioners along with a heat protector are opportunities to retail the products that will really work, and if they’ll need it suggest a glaze in-between services to top up that colour.

For Clara Paget who I’d just got back to blonde, going back to deep 5.62 in Chromative was nice and simple, the reason I chose a true semi permanent was because she’s filming for 6 months in South Africa and so it needs to stay fresh with minimum damage – simply apply on towel dried freshly washed hair and leave for 15- 20 mins. Simple and it can be done every week on set or with me in the salon.

So what do you do when someone says “I want to go red?” For me, my top lip breaks out in a little sweat, and I always do a thorough consultation: why, when, what and especially, is this break up colour? Out comes google and we look at images, use Pinterest, make sure we’re on the same page and then we can move forward. It’s so important to use proper images, not just the little swatch of hair on the chart which is really for our guidance, not the client’s. I just had a lovely naturally long blonde with Balayage who has been talking about going a soft copper for a while and so we went for it; I used a Majirel 8.04 after I had pre-coloured the Balayage with Dia Light and then a virgin full head tint application. 4 tubes later and both she and I were delighted with the super soft, very pretty results which I then detailed with some more Balayage keeping it on trend.
